Today's P/L and Yesterday's P/L

1. Today's P/L

Definition: the cumulative profit and loss from the close of the previous trading day to the present

Formula:

Today's P/L of a Position = (Today's Market Value - Yesterday's Market Value) + (Today's Selling Value - Today's Buying Value)

Today's Market Value is the real-time market value of the position; Yesterday's Market Value is the previous closing price for the regular trading hours multiplied by yesterday’s position size.

Today's P/L of an Account = Sum of Today's P/L of All Positions

Overnight price not used: 12:00 AM ET

Overnight price used: 8:00 PM ET

You can check or change the settings via Settings > Trading > Position Display > US Stock MV and P/L Calculation

Other Markets

12:00 AM local time

E.g.: The replacement time for the Hong Kong market is 12:00 AM CST

 

2. Today's P/L% 

Formula: Today's P/L% = Today's P/L / (Starting Net Assets + Floating Net Flow Peak)

Note: If you have a single-currency account that has enabled consolidated buying power, its Starting Net Assets and Floating Net Flow Peak shall be from all your accounts that have enabled consolidated buying power.

Explanation:

1) Starting Net Assets

Assets include cash and positions. The definitions of Starting for different kinds of accounts are as follows:

US Account

Overnight price not used: 12:00 a.m. ET

(Daylight Saving Time: 12:00 p.m. (T+1) CST; Standard Time: 1:00 p.m. (T+1) CST)

Overnight price used: 8:00 p.m. ET

(Daylight Saving Time: 8:00 a.m. (T+1) CST;

Standard Time: 9:00 a.m. (T+1) CST)

Hong Kong/A-Shares Account

9:00 a.m. CST

Universal Account

12:00 a.m. CST

2) Floating Net Flow Peak

It means the peak value of cash changes during the calculation period, and will be 0 if the peak value is less than 0. Cash changes may be due to deposits and withdrawals, funds transfers, currency exchange, position transfers, subscription to or redemption of funds, bond trading, card/coupon deposits, IPO, and ESOP funds transfers. The calculation periods for different kinds of accounts are as follows:

US Account

Overnight price not used: 12:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. (T+1) ET

Overnight price used: 12:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. (T+1) ET

(Daylight Saving Time: 12:00 p.m. – 12:00 p.m. (T+1) CST; Standard Time: 1:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. (T+1) CST)

Hong Kong/A-Shares Account

9:00 a.m. – 4:10 p.m. CST

Universal Account

12:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. (T+1) CST

Examples:

Example 1: If Today's P/L is 1,000, Starting Net Assets are 20,000, and 10,000 is withdrawn, then Floating Net Flow Peak will be 0.
Today's P/L% = 1000/(20000+0) = 5.00%

Example 2: If Today's P/L is 1,000, Starting Net Assets are 20,000, and 20,000 is deposited, then Floating Net Flow Peak will be 20,000.
Today's P/L% = 1000/(20000+20000) = 2.50%

Example 3: If Today’s P/L is 1,000, Starting Net Assets are 20,000, 20,000 is deposited first, and then 10,000 is withdrawn, then Floating Net Flow Peak will be 20,000.
Today's P/L% = 1000/(20000+20000) = 2.50%

Example 4: If Today's P/L is 1,000, Starting Net Assets are 20,000, 10,000 is withdrawn, and then 20,000 is deposited, then Floating Net Flow Peak will be 10,000.
Today's P/L% = 1000/(20000+10000) = 3.33%

 

3. Yesterday's P/L

Definition: the cumulative profit and loss realized for the previous trading day

Formula: Yesterday's P/L = (Yesterday's Market Value - Market Value for the Day before Yesterday) + (Yesterday's Selling Value - Yesterday's Buying Value)

Explanation: Yesterday's Market Value is the closing price for the regular trading hours of yesterday multiplied by the position size on yesterday; Market Value for the Day Before Yesterday is the closing price for the regular trading hours of the day before yesterday multiplied by the position size on the day before yesterday

Note: Yesterday's P/L is displayed only if you use the overnight price and only from 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM ET
